Shoes Stolen From Waiting Room - What to do?

Original message posted by "Shelly"   03-07-2008

Hi,

One of our students recently had a pair of shoes stolen from the waiting room at our studio. We don't like students bringing their bags into the studio because it clutters up the floor and can cause accidents, so we encourage them to leave their stuff in the waiting room or their car.

We've never had anything stolen in over 30 years (or at least that we were made aware of).

Short of building a set of lockers in each studio or taking up a big chunk of the waiting room with lockers, I can't think what else we can do?

Any ideas?

Of course, there's always the possibility that someone picked them up by accident and we're going to send a letter home to parents in case that happened.

Just seems like this is one of those situations that could really get blown out of all proportion if we don't handle it right.

Would love some suggestions or to hear what other studios have done.

Thanks,

Shelly

OK, I think we were lucky.

We sent out a letter to parents saying what had happened and re-stating our policy.

The letter focused more on the possibility of someone picking up the shoes by accident. And the very next day, we found a bag outside the studio door with the missing shoes.

Emergency over.

Shelly.

Hi ladies,
In the 18 years I have been in business we never actually had a pair of shoes stolen ...........................until these last couple of years. We added a private dressing room for the girls- this is when it all started. Cash, ipods, cameras & shoes go missing on a monthly basis. I think as long as things are kept out in the open as in your studio it was probably a mistake. In any given class you can have 10 or so identical size and color of shoes.

I have put a set of lockers in the dressing room, but no one seems to use them. Lately the kids have been bringing valuables and laying them on my desk.

I have told the parents several times to mark their kids shoes with permanent ink and I publish all theft in my monthly newsletter to make people more cautious and aware, but it is continuing which sickens me. We are a small town and I just can't believe that parents don't notice when their children have something in their possession that doesn't belong to them.

Our next step is surveillance cameras which sounds rediculous. Where are the parents in all this?

Well I went off on a tangent, sorry! Consider yourself blessed. I'm sure your shoes will turn up soon. God Bless. Miss Sue2
